Split Nights: What to Do When Your Baby Is Awake for Two Hours in the Middle of the Night
Your baby wakes somewhere between midnight and 3am and then just stays awake. There is no crying, no hunger, nothing that looks like pain. Instead there is babbling, kicking, a huge smile when you walk in, and absolutely no interest in going back to sleep for the next ninety minutes.
This is what we call a split night, and it is exhausting precisely because nothing looks wrong. There is nothing to soothe. Baby is fine, and you are the only one suffering.
What is a split night, and why is your baby happy rather than upset?
A split night is a long night waking, usually somewhere between one and two hours, where baby is wide awake and content rather than upset. The night ends up split into two stretches of sleep with a party in the middle.
Baby is cheerful because baby is not tired, and that is most of the explanation right there. A distressed waking is usually telling you about discomfort, hunger, or trouble linking sleep cycles. A happy waking is telling you something different. The body has used up its drive to sleep and has not yet been given a reason to sleep again.
Why wake windows alone will never explain this
When we talk about sleep, we are really talking about two systems working together. The first is sleep pressure, which is the drive to sleep that builds the longer anyone stays awake. Think of it as a tank that fills all day and empties when we sleep. The second is the circadian clock, which is the body's internal sense of when it expects to be asleep and when it expects to be up.
When those two are out of step with each other, sleep gets messy. A split night is that mismatch, and it is not a sign of a broken baby. Nothing is regressing here and nothing needs repair.
This is also why a schedule built only on wake windows eventually stops working for a lot of families. Wake windows handle the tank. They say nothing at all about the clock. Baby has two sleep systems, exactly like you do, and we need to look after both of them.
The melatonin curve, and why 2am is the vulnerable hour
Melatonin starts rising around 6pm, peaks in the first half of the night, and then tapers off toward morning. Picture a gentle hill laid across the night, rising in the evening and sloping down before dawn.
A split night usually lands on the far side of that hill, after the peak, when the body's own support for sleep is thinning out. If the sleep tank was already emptied during the first stretch of the night, there is not much left to hold baby down, and what you get is a perfectly happy, perfectly awake child at 2am.
The hours after 4am tend to be the hardest for the same reason. The hill is bottoming out by then, which is why early morning waking is really its own separate problem with its own answer.
The arithmetic that causes it
For most babies, night sleep tops out around eleven hours. Sleep across twenty-four hours is a finite amount that gets shared out between day and night, not an endless supply that keeps adding up. So when there is too much day sleep, we often get a split night, because the pressure that was supposed to carry the second half of the night got spent at 3pm instead. It works the other way too, and too much night sleep will usually eat into naps.
A night-by-night protocol with a checkpoint
Give every change at least three days, and ideally five, before you judge it. Please do not decide anything based on one night.
Nights one to three: fix the ceiling first. Cap naps at around two hours, do not let a nap start after 5pm, and wake baby by 8am in the morning. Change nothing else for now. Those three rules on their own resolve a lot of split nights, because they stop day sleep from quietly eating into the night. Some babies need a slightly tighter cap and some can hold a little more, so treat these as a starting point we adjust to your baby.
Nights one to three, in parallel: anchor the first nap. The 9am nap is our reset button for the whole day. Put it at 9 or 9:30 no matter what time baby woke up, instead of counting a wake window forward from an unpredictable wake time. Anchoring gently pulls the circadian clock back into line, while chasing the wake time keeps it drifting. If that first nap currently only happens on you, then moving that nap to the crib is the first job we do, because a nap you cannot put at a fixed time cannot anchor much of anything.
Night four: the checkpoint. By the fourth night, the awake block should be noticeably shorter, even if it has not gone away yet. Ninety minutes should be looking more like sixty. If it is shorter, we are heading the right way and you hold everything steady for another three nights. If it is the same or longer, then day sleep probably is not the culprit, and we move on to step four.
Nights four to seven: adjust the last wake window. The last stretch before bed is where bedtime most often goes wrong. Four hours is roughly the ceiling, and most babies do not get there until somewhere between nine and eleven months, which is laid out age by age in the 4 to 12 month sleep survival guide with sample schedules you can adapt to your unique baby's sleep needs. If your baby's final stretch is well under that, stretch it by fifteen to twenty minutes and hold it for three nights before you decide anything.
Nights seven to ten: re-measure, do not re-guess. Write down bedtime, how long the awake block lasted, and total night sleep across the whole week. Then compare the seven-day average to the week before, rather than last night to the night before. Sleep is never linear, and anything can happen once.
What to do when the schedule is already correct
You capped the naps. You moved bedtime. Your schedule looks textbook and your child is still up at 2am for ninety minutes.
At that point we stop guessing at the schedule and start measuring sleep latency, which is simply how long it takes your child to fall asleep once they are down. Latency is what tells us which direction to move in.
Ten to twenty minutes is what we are aiming for. Thirty is about the outer edge. If latency sits in that range at every sleep, the schedule really is right and what we are dealing with is circadian alignment rather than quantity. Hold the 9am anchor firmly for a full week, keep bedtime at the same clock time every night, and change nothing else. Consistent timing is the lever here, not more sleep or less.
Under five minutes usually means crashing. A child who is out cold within three minutes is generally overtired rather than well scheduled. It sounds backwards, but an overtired child can absolutely split the night, because being overtired fragments sleep rather than deepening it. This baby usually needs more day sleep, not less.
A long settle followed by an enormous nap usually means undertired. Forty minutes of happy chatting in the crib (cot) and then a two-and-a-half-hour nap is the classic signature. This is where we trim, and honestly this is about the only place we trim.
If latency is in range, the schedule has held steady for a week, and the split night is still there, that is the moment to bring in one-on-one sleep support rather than changing more variables. When two systems will not line up, someone needs to look at the whole twenty-four-hour picture with you, not add another fifteen-minute tweak.
The two side effects to watch for
The overtired swing. Trimming naps is the advice everyone gives, and when it gets applied to every baby regardless it often creates an overtired mess that feels much worse than the split night you started with. There is so much weight put on the word overtired. Most babies are overtired at some point in the day, and that is normal rather than an emergency. The mistake we want to avoid is panic-cutting day sleep because of one night waking, and then cutting again when things get worse. Trim once, hold three nights, and check latency before you trim any further.
The 5am collapse. Moving bedtime is a real lever, but it cuts both ways. A 6pm bedtime, used as the regular bedtime, will usually give you a 5am wake-up. If bedtime is sitting between six and seven, then a 5am start is more or less expected rather than a mystery. We have not really solved the split night if we traded it for an hour of lost morning sleep, so keep an eye on total night sleep against that eleven-hour ceiling.
How to handle the wake itself, in the moment
While we are fixing the schedule, the wakes are still going to happen. What you do inside them is what decides whether the pattern fades or settles in.
Keep the room cave dark. It should be too dark to read the title of a picture book, at naps as well as at night. Light is the strongest signal the circadian clock gets, and every bit of it during a night wake nudges that clock the wrong way. If you are mid-transition, finish dropping the swaddle before you change anything else about the night.
Keep it dark and boring. Leave the lights off. Keep talking to a few quiet words. Try not to pick up your phone, because the screen lights up the room for both of you.
Try not to turn it into playtime. A cheerful baby at 2am is genuinely lovely company, and that is exactly the problem. Interaction rewards the wake and teaches the clock that the middle of the night is social time.
Do not start the day. No feed you would not otherwise be doing, no leaving the room, no starting the morning routine early. We want the line between night and morning to stay clear.
Stay present if presence is your approach. Boring does not mean absent. You can sit next to the crib in the dark, offering quiet reassurance, without giving your child any real reason to stay awake. That is the same ladder of support that holds a gentle approach that has stalled together.
